L'Ombre dans l'Eau Review

One of my wishes is that those dark trees, / So old and firm they scarcely show the breeze, / Were not, as ’twere, the mere mask of gloom, / But stretched away unto the edge of doom. _-Robert Frost, “Into My Own”
Diptyque’s L’Ombre dans l’Eau is both aquatic and lush. This perfume paints a picture of tranquil waterways surrounded by blooming flora. The name itself translates to “The Shadow in the Water,” hinting at a duality that balances the lightness of aquatic notes with the depth of earthy elements.
Within the top notes the blackcurrant leaf is a standout, delivering a delightful green bitterness that is refreshing yet soft. This initial energy is complemented by petitgrain, which adds a subtle, woody facet to the composition.
As the fragrance evolves, there’s a gentle floral arrangement underscored by musk and ambergris. This transition balances the initial brightness with a richer, deeper profile. It’s the interplay between these notes that creates the vibe of being outside on a hot day, but shaded by overhanging branches or vines. The base-y musk and ambergirs rounds out the fragrance, allowing it to drift into the background of your day without fading into nothingness.
L’Ombre dans l’Eau is enchanting. If I had a critique it would be in it’s longevity, but it’s dry down is still ridiculously pleasant.
